Thomson Foundation was in Tonga to help establish Tonga Broadcasting Corporation’s first television channel, launched to celebrate the 80th birthday of the King of Tonga. The foundation's trainers put the station’s staff – who had little experience outside of radio reporting – through an intensive course in television news and current affairs production.
