Director of Training and Communications
Deborah plays a key part in developing and promoting our training programmes and is our specialist on gender in media. As our senior in house trainer, she leads our network of over 200 trainers and consultants.
Her recent training projects have focused around mobile journalism and digital skills. She worked with regional journalists in Kazakhstan and civil society organisations in Thailand and led the broadcast and digital training programme in Ukraine for the EU funded Regional Voices project.
Deborah joined the Thomson Foundation in September 2015 after leading a number of our training projects in the Middle East and United States of America. She is an experienced broadcast executive and educator with extensive international experience in training journalists and university students.
She has more than 30 years’ experience as a senior journalist and manager working for UK and International media organisations, including the BBC, Al Jazeera, ITV and Thomson Reuters.
At one of the UK’s leading journalism universities, Nottingham Trent University, she set up a ground-breaking project in cooperation with the city’s television station and developed the station’s news website.
She holds a MA in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester and a Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice from the University of Gloucester. She is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and a judge for the UK’s Royal Television Society’s Journalism Awards.
